With that many lines in the waters of the St. Lucie River, Indian River Lagoo,n and offshore, a supporting industry rich in experience and expertise is vital. Fortunately, Martin County’s marine industry encompasses world-class yachtsmen, mariners, marine mechanics, boatbuilders, and more.
Many industry standouts, such as Whiticar and Evinrude, tout legacies that predate the county’s 100-year history. Other new trailblazers, such as Billy Knowles, Jim Smith, Dominick LaCombe, and Mark Willis, lead and define a new generation.
According to the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast, Martin County’s marine industry generates $1.2 billion annually and employs about 10,000 people. Considered a Hub of Excellence, the BDBMC has outlined the extent of the marine industry’s economic impact here.
Representing more than 130 businesses in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties, MIATC was chartered in 1974 to promote, protect, and grow the local marine industry. Its annual showcase event, the Stuart Boat Show, takes place Jan. 10-12, featuring 200 exhibitors and hundreds of vessels ranging from 12 to 90 feet in length. The family-friendly spectacle is among the top 20 events in the Southeast of the United States.
MIATC—an investor of the Business Development Board of Martin County—advocates for priorities that benefit its members and the community, including workforce development, ensuring that there will be enough skilled trades and a skill-ready workforce for future generations. In addition to promoting safe boating practices, MIATC cultivates workforce development programs to prepare prospects for success in the industry’s wide array of opportunities. It also ensures safe, navigable passageways, advances policies supporting maritime interests, and organizes events to keep the waterways clean and to promote the industry, such as the annual Stuart Boat Show and the Martin County Christmas Boat Parade.
