Company profile: Beaver EcoWorks in Indiantown

Ted Astolfi is a fixture in the Martin County business community with a long history of noteworthy achievements. Currently executive director of the Economic Council of Martin County, he also helped found the Business Development Board of Martin County.

Ted is currently engaged in an exciting endeavor on behalf of Beaver EcoWorks. With 10 employees and based in a 23,000-square-foot facility in Indiantown, the company is bringing a unique approach to water treatment that can benefit municipalities, industrial and commercial operations and one day—home residences. Ted shared more with us about Beaver EcoWorks.

What does Beaver EcoWorks do?

We’re a design-and-built operator of water pre-treatment systems on a commercial industrial scale. We design systems that—in the municipal water system—sit between the well, the source water, and the water plant. It’s like running your air conditioner at home with or without an air filter. Well, we’re the air filter.

Is there a home application?

Everybody can use it. We’re working on residential line right now have a municipal/government side.

How does your technology work?

We treat wastewater at the end of the process because wastewater plants themselves can only take out so much. When we treat wastewater, we make it ground-discharge quality so they can use it as irrigation quality water. We’re providing an innovative technology that uses electricity, not chemicals.

Very interesting.

It’s a better safeguard for the public and it also results in reduced costs because you’re not paying for recurring chemical costs. It’s a more sustainable and more affordable way to do things. We don’t soften the water or add salts, but we do remove the hardness from the water—which is created by calcium in the water. For people on well water, we remove the iron from the water. In fact, we recently installed a unit at Charlie Leighton Park to remove the iron there because everything was suffering from that reddish discoloration.

What’s your role in the company?

I’m a junior partner and the business development director.

Where is your customer base?

Right now, our target market is 70 to 100 miles from Indiantown. We’re committed to ensuring that we give our clients high-quality customer service. We’re bringing a steady, sustainable, strategic approach to growth, working with local municipal governments and industrial users.

So taken at scale for a large industrial user, the reduction in chemicals that your innovation provides can really make a difference in their bottom line?

Definitely. Broader adoption of Beaver EcoWorks technology means fewer chemicals, and commands less maintenance for equipment that’s associated with the use of such chemicals.

How does the use of electricity make a difference?

Our use of electricity involves reactors with special pipes and a metal core that the electricity runs through, transforming the chemistry of the water. The result is calcium ions that are less inclined to attract to other materials, and instead, attract other ions, which makes them less sticky, so to speak, as they flow through the system.

Do you notice a difference when you drink the water?

Yes! Definitely. It goes down easier.

Sounds like something individual consumers would appreciate.

We agree. We’re working on attaining broader overall adoption of our technology to grow a residential market.
